Time Management

The Kenyon Review · "Time Management" by Oz Johnson I first heard of management consulting as a freshman at Stanford. The resident advisor of my dorm, a junior, said it was her dream job, which struck me as very urbane and sophisticated, even though I did not know what management consultants did. Without conducting further research, I decided to apply for a summer internship at a major consulting firm. I was granted an interview.  My interviewer launched into a business scenario: a mattress company has had smashing success with a two-sided mattress — the kind where there is no right side up, and either side may be slept on — and is considering developing a one-sided mattress, which must never be flipped. How would I help the CEO think through this decision?  Had I known anything about management consulting, I would have said that I would direct the CEO’s attention to two things: revenues and costs, which are, of course, the drivers of profit.
