Stillways

Except in darkness a fog has brushed against grass Except a rain moving through branches at night    has lifted away: from the window    you watch but don't see Except in spring there are days when the shawl of snow    has sunk into earth and the grass beads with fog-dust    and you have slept, and when you woke           found that nothing had           changed And set out into the lead-lights of dawn,    your travel quiet, eyes half    closed to the cold as the corridors of night spread out before me    in that narrow morning, and I thought I heard voices calling             as the light came on— But there were no voices, there was no message Nothing but rain-dust and moth-dust Nothing but the sound of rain    papering a few    leaves at the edge of    the field, making    inside me a hollow    chronicle of blood,
