Today Is the Day

The fourth house on the Meals on Wheels route was in a complex Kalpana had not previously visited. The complex was called Myrtle Tree Gardens, which was a misnomer because there were no myrtles there, and few trees of any kind. Most of the plants visible in the mobile homes' yards were azaleas, weeds, and unevenly cut boxwood hedges. A plastic pot of crimson geraniums was hanging from a hook by the front door of No. 77 Willow Way. Kalpana noted from her delivery list that she was to drop off one meal, for a Mrs. Leela Subramanium. Immediately after she knocked, an elderly woman in a flowered dress came to the door. Her bearing was upright, but her head was moving back and forth in small jerky movements. It gave her an air of uncertainty that was undercut by her tightly pursed lips. "You, who are you?" she said, when she saw Kalpana. "Kalpana Fonseka," Kalpana said, proffering the packet of food she had taken from the crate in her trunk. "I will be bringing your hot meal
