La Rivière de Cassis

The Blackcurrant River rolls obscurely   Through strange valleys: The voice of a hundred crows accompanies it, truly   Virtuous voice of angels: Along with the great movements of fir trees   When several winds quarrel. Everything surges with the appalling mysteries   Of ancient country landscapes: Of strongholds visited, of important parks:   Along these riverbanks We hear dead passions of wandering knights:   But the wind is so salubrious. Let the rambler peer through the lattice:   With greater courage he goes. Dispatched by the Lord, the forest soldiers—   Beloved delicious crows! Drive out the peasant who is old and devious,   Who toasts with his stump of an elbow.
