Though the Mavrogordato translation of Cavafy has been available for some years, the publication of Miss Dalven's book is the first occasion I have had to read through the whole body of his work, and to attempt to judge (insofar as a reader who must encounter the poems in English can hope to judge) the nature of his curious accomplishment. For Cavafy is not at all like the Greek poets considered below; indeed, he is not like much of anyone save himself. But how far is that self a successful poet? Cavafy
