I Think about Australia Endlessly

for John Kinsella I think about Australia endlessly. And when I stop thinking about it, I pick up the newspaper and there are stories About the Australian boom economy, or that Australian actors play Everyone except Australians, snag the few good parts— Who in the world other than Cate Blanchett or Mel Gibson Can play a southern psychic or indomitable Colonel?— Or that only Robert Hughes's wrecked car has been iconicized by an artist Who's angry with the critic for his hostile attitude toward Australia; Or that koalas may look cute but they're cranky and vicious and fall On their heads out of trees because they're zonked on eucalyptus. On a drowsy Sunday morning, no relief: there's an Australian feature On the front page of the Travel section, rugged men on horseback   in the outback; I can't bear to read it because the thought of escaping is too painful at present. I want so badly to be elsewhere: elsewhere elsewhere elsewhere. Australia Australia Australia:
