A Month in Summer

In haibun, which combines prose and poetry (in the four-line form in which Nobuyuki Yuasa has translated Issa's haiku) FIRST DAY: Several years ago I wrote this, in imitation of haiku: The frost was late this year: Crystal nips the petals As my lover grows impatient. I can't think of an adequate way of rendering "O my prophetic soul!" into acceptable haiku. Perhaps the situation itself is more tractable: Let down the curtain! Hamlet dies each night But is always revived. Love, too, requires genius. SECOND DAY: The drama of love: Scenes, intermissions Played by two actors, Their own spectators. THIRD DAY: Strange how the tedium of love makes women babble, while it reduces men to a dour silence. As my voice skipped along the surfaces of communication like a water bug, below it I sensed his quiet: the murky depths of the pond. Alone, I play a Telemann concerto on the phonograph.
