Mr. Martz's book is everywhere informed and informative, nowhere leaving the reader at a loss to know whether one is being tendered the demonstrable or the hypothetic; and his book is, by virtue of its style, the work of a literary man. His general category is one to be desiderated: that recent kind of study to which belong Helen White's English Devotional Literature . . . 1600-40 (1931) and The Tudor Books of Devotion (1951), Helen Gardner's edition of Donne's Divine Poems (1952), and Rosemund Tuve's A Reading of George Herbert (1952): that is, a study of the interrelations of religion and literature in the ages of Their Majesties Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I.
