Isherwood's greatest accomplishments are his characters, the energy and vividness with which they are drawn. Mr. Norris, Sally Bowles, Frl. Schroeder, Schmidt, Kuno, the Nowaks, etc., and above all Bergmann—they comprise a sort of minor Dickens gallery. A Dickens, to be sure, in the more astringent terms of the present, with greater caution, less bounce and less zeal. But the energy is still remarkable, at least for our time; and it is expended on characterizations in such a way that we find Mr. Isherwood daring even when he is most conventional. Mr. Norris’ wig, for example. That wig is a hard thing to forget.
