UFOs

For the moment, Victoria Crawford has two lovers—one who is married, one who is not. The latter, the one who's not married, he's new, a mistake, really, a charity case of sorts. She doesn't know what she's doing with him. The other, the one who's married, he's safe, predictable, familiar. He was, until recently, her boss. They work together at WTFN, the NBC affiliate in Boston. Richard Early brought Victoria aboard in January as a nightside reporter, but after a tepid February sweeps, a media conglomerate took over the station and cleaned house, demoting Richard to special assignments producer. He has more time than he knows what to do with now, free to leave the newsroom whenever he wants to conduct "research," which for the last four months has happened to land him, every Tuesday and Thursday, in front of Victoria's door. This particular Tuesday in July, he's loaded down with groceries, out of breath from the three flights of stairs to her one-bedroom on Marlborough Stre
