In the Forest

In the forest, Orlando and Adam are starving, particularly Adam. "I don't care," says Adam, Orlando's aged servant. "I'll just die." Orlando doesn't agree with this. Adam has taken care of him for years, and it's time for Orlando to reciprocate. He finds a soft, mossy mound under a tree and carefully lays Adam's old body where it will be least uncomfortable. "You stay here, old man," says Orlando. "I'll come back with food. Call me a monkey's uncle if I don't." Adam smiles faintly. "I won't be calling you much of anything if we don't both eat something soon," he says. "And I mean soon." Orlando builds a pillow of fallen leaves and other forest detritus under Adam's aged head. "Very nice," sighs Adam, as Orlando leaves. "Thank you, my boy." Eventually Orlando comes upon a grove where a great picnic is taking place. Some men have spread food on a rough table; others are sitting on the fragrant pine needles in twos and threes, laughing and joking. Above their heads,
