            Introduction            by James Kimbrell Mr. Frank Bidart is the author of five books of poems: Golden State, The Book of the Body, The Sacrifice, In the Western Night: Collected Poems 1965-1990, and most recently, Desire, published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Among his many awards are the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Foundation Award and the Shelley Award from the Poetry Society of America. A student of Robert Lowell's at Harvard in the 1960s, Bidart went on to become an invaluable friend to Robert Lowell, often reading and editing Lowell's poems with Lowell until they reached a stage of completion, which, considering Lowell's standards, was no small accomplishment.
