Landscape

At home it is a Dutch landscape: The houses terraced on the hills are bathed in golden light as though viewed through aged varnish. They are nestled into the soft, grassy slope like ornaments on green frosting. The scene is framed in my rear-view mirror as I descend onto the freeway. Mid-road it's instant night, a panorama of grays and deeper grays. The wet sheet of rain blows up and sticks against the windshield. The headlights of other cars are buttery yellow roses losing their petals on the glassy pavement. The dark curtain of asphalt is thrown aside briefly and our world is suddenly revealed to us: precarious, fragile, standing on bright stilts above a chasm. The car is striped with wavy rivulets. They wriggle and crawl toward me like all the tears I wasted on futile things coming back, crawling back, wriggling back. I stop for bread, eggs, maple syrup, cheese, mineral water. The paper bags wilt in the rain as I run back to the car. It is 3 P.M. but it might as well be 8. I merg
