Peter Taylor’s Most Recent Fiction

The Old Forest and Other Stories by Peter Taylor. Garden City. NY: Dial Press, 1985. 358 pages. $16.95. In this latest collection of Peter Taylor's fiction, he demonstrates how committedly he is the short-story-writer equivalent of a "novelist of manners" and how capable he is of making stories out of material and forms that give him a distinct place in contemporary letters. The milieu of the stories is specific: it is pre-civil-rights southern uppermiddle-class. Beyond this distinction, place means nothing: stories that take place in Nashville might just as well take place in Memphis and, of course, vice versa. Cliché and originality blend; we recognize the types immediately, but almost as quickly understand their individuality, their credibility as characters.
