The Art of William Carlos Williams: A Discovery and Possession of America by James Guimond. University of Illinois Press, $6.95. It would be a salutary cultural situation if Mr. Guimond's book on William Carlos Williams were read in high schools throughout the country after students had read Williams, but not before. The assumption is that it will be read by college students and the general public. As poetry comes to be better taught in our high schools, and as poets of Williams' generation and younger come to be known, a book such as this will be valuable to the young inasmuch as it is easily readable and understandable, and draws together information which young students would not be able to assemble. The author sets out to present the life and works of Williams under the rubric in the title that he was supposed to have discovered and possessed America. He discovered and possessed his view of America. The works are presented thoroughly, in more detail than the
