My Parents Enroute

Dead to the world in love my parents lie, Snoring, and solemn as princes catafalqued, Their dreaming toes turned upward to the sky. Heavy with sleepy beauty, my mother walked Last night, in her dream, in a world unknown To me, to her, or to my father; she talked, In that landscape, though mutely as a stone, In colloquy with princesses of state More marvelous than any that has been, Waking. This of her dream I would relate. My father, brave without fierceness, I have seen As after the golden tawny-yellow beast he went, The mightiest hunter, emblazoned with exploits brave, No fear in his look, but pity, and brave content; My father was sent to chase that beast and have The colloquy stately and endless argument Of the hunt. Thus through his dream did he move. I think in their bedclothes' tangle and humble sleep Implicit is legend, though false as their dream, Yet true as their bodies' submissions.
