The Holy Sinner by Thomas Mann. Translated by H. T. Lowe-Porter. Knopf. $3.50 Thomas Mann by Henry Hatfield. Makers of Modern Literature series, New Directions. $2.00 Mr. Hatfield notes that Mann's reputation has lately suffered a decline; and in the small but comprehensive book on Mann that he has written for the Makers of Modern Literature series, he meets this situation with skill and tact. "Such shifts in literary fashion are supremely unimportant," Mr. Hatfield observes; and by simply assuming Mann's continuing importance as if it were a fact, by modestly demonstrating it in the fine details of his criticism, by consistently relating his negative judgments (which are many) to his positive ones, he goes far towards making a disinterested reader assume the same thing. On the subject of Mann's ideas and their implications Mr. Hatfield is not very impressive. Where a more embattled critic might have refreshed our feeling for Mann's mind if only by assailing it, Mr. Hatfield
