He was the last man freeThe rest were spiesHe knew it by their handsTheir lips their eyes And knew they watched him closeAll day all nightHis life a prime conjectureIn their sight His rising in their notebooksAnd his walkThe cause of much discussionMuch wild talk And when he wandered freelyWandered farHe was their gravitationTheir home star And when he took a candleWent to bedThey lurked about his feetAbout his head And when his pulse gave outBegan to fallHe was the consternationOf them all And when his heart gave outBegan to dieHe heard them all about himHeard them cry "Your heart is meat to usYour pulse our drinkYour heart must neither lagNor your pulse sink "You are our gravitationOur home starOur weekday workOur Sunday rest you are "You are our weekday workOur Sunday restResist that farewell rattleIn your chest "Your obstinacy isSheer sabotageUnfair to organizedEspionage" He said "If I amMeat and drink to youYour work your leisureAnd your home st
