Block Party

The Kenyon Review · "Block Party" by Danny Lang-Perez A man has begun visiting our cul-de-sac on Friday nights, driving from who knows where to make some extra cash cooking for the neighborhood atop a rented U-Haul utility trailer. He insists it’s cheaper this way, that ever-renting begets the better scratch, food truck liabilities and storage fees what they are. We are charmed by this little prudency, so we tolerate the borrowed trailer blocking our sidewalk, our brick pathways. We look past the occasional onion skin in the gutter. He is very clean. The equipment, at least, he owns: portable generator, induction stoves, blender, lowboy fridge, plancha, every size saucepan, a crazy-versatile cleaver—the whole shebang, with more tools in that hideous ’93 Geo Metro he’s hitch-balled for towing. We snap photos of the little clown car while he works the grill, texting our parents in their community homes across town: Remember my first car?? and So tinyyy!!!!!!! and Wow
