Polonaise

Our tenant, Marek, dreams of Landowska playing Scriabin, of strawberry flowers starring a meadow. Handsome Marek, pouring honey into bowls of Rice Krispies. Sunday. Monday. Does he hear me worrying? Our musical Pole with binoculars. When did it come last? Who will love me next? My child pokes at blinis on her plate, prints "Mrs. Marek" in a soft notebook. "How does a man? . . . " She points to her thighs. The moon rolls in. Strawberry red. Marek has spotted Mars. "I write music of planet," he calls us to the yard. Raging crickets near our red clay road subside. Fall. Rain-soaked blue leaves. Snow boots and connubial crows leave tracks in the mud. Marek finds a moon goddess at a nearby mall. Strawberry lips jabber and scold, "Music, music, that woman and her child, that's all you ever talk about." Her secret fur is red, gamey as a fox. "Look," I soothe my daughter, "Marek stirs cream in someone else's kitchen nook." "Advertise for another man," she says, po
