When nothing's going on but windand every street's a back street,I love to drive among white clapboard houses that seem huddledto the road in this short light, and between the empty gallerias which, come April, will change names again. Origins II, formerly Lobelia Handcrafts, will become SomethingElse, sure as the signin the closed chromium fishmarketreads strawberry bass because few anymore will eat a thing called tautog. Needing the romance of asteepled seaside to photograph, and its name to screw on bumpers and sterns, in their mania for diversion the almost-richair their privacies with skylights, knock out walls and ceilingsfor hand-adzed beams and hook-scarf joints: whitewashedinside and out, a few more authentic capes improve intoour century. From this harbor the streets tendtoward, craft so elegant we'd wake bankrupt just for dreaming themhave been drawn up railsto sleep insect-like in yardsof fitted counterpanes, or spread sail now among the Antilles.
