Patrick's mum, a Swiss Countess, mails three thousand gilt postcards to their whole sprawled family, friends, all friends of friends, announcing—as one might a royal wedding or jazz festival—her son's up-and-coming forty-five-second take on "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous": a much-trimmed segment of his original three minute interview debut, taped by old majestic larynx himself, perennial emcee. Card bushels are despatched, a few hundred per hour, dark to dawn to dusk—one breathless weekend, by a trio of couriers (her relay team, running their never-ending cycle of shifts), posted, scrupulously,to some four or five continents. She'dresearched, with utmost care, those telecomsatellite networks servicing each remote corner of Planetpinpointing up-to-the-minute times, dates; trickiest for islandnations and dependencies which might have to rely on thirdhand rerunserial rights, plus weeks or months of delays down the road,or sea-lanes, whichever the case: exact starting time
