Venetian Summer

David Posner VENETIAN SUMMER In the Accademia I remembered the Church Was home, full of bargains. A duke murdered At the Elevation of the Host, love And war danced together to pax vobiscum. These works of art rose like rocks on the beach. It was hard to tell whether the bishops were swimming Or drownming in the canaL They held staffs, Crosses toward the leaning crowd whose mood May have been wooden or as sharp as swords. Bellini's Virgin, blue, never defeated, Reminded me of tall women downstairs At my hotel. I thought in that brown light How the drunk sailors broke into my room And asked how long I'd stay. I said, three weeks: I never heard men laugh so loud. Palatial, The Pensione Dogi was a brothel. The Madam peered at the frescoes in my room, Explained, smiling, "You're in good company":318 Angels, countesses, the gold still fresh. Above me spires, beneath my window shadows Whipped the air, flags draped the stolen horses. Communists marched singing through the clock tower, Arran
