In I953, Warren Ramsey's lules Laforgue and the Ironic Inheritance was published, the first critical biography of Laforgue to appear in English (there are only three in French), and now we have William Jay Smith's generous selection and translation from all the various genres of the La- forgue canon. Laforgue's submergence is not surprising. There has not been any ferment of French interest in Laforgue.
