Money Getting, Part X

A Verse Digest of P. T. Barnum’s The Art of Money Getting (1880)

in engaging employees
be careful to get the best

you cannot have too good tools to work with
there is no tool so particular as living tools

get a good one, keep him
he learns something every day
and you are benefited

he is worth more to you this year than last
provided his habits are good, faithful

if he gets more valuable
demands an increase of salary
let him go, discharge him
his place may be supplied
he is good for nothing
if he thinks he is invaluable

an important element in an employee is the brain

I have a pair of hands and one of my fingers thinks
I have a brain that thinks; I think all over
I am a thinking as well as a working man

men who have brains are valuable
and not to be readily parted with
keep them at reasonable salaries
