An Evening with “A Person from Vermont”

Believe it or not, that blurry, ultrasound-quality* image is of John Irving speaking at the Aycock Auditorium at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro on Thursday, November 6.

Two nights after an historic presidential election, John Irving discussed the American tendency to suppress. This is the land where we illegalize abortion and gay marriage, the land where we ban books. Three of John Irving’s books have been banned–and he’s disappointed that more of his novels haven’t been banned. The people who ban books, he said, are the people who say, “You can’t make believe this, you can’t make believe that.” John Irving’s response? “Oh, yes we can.”
